If you haven't read or listened to the first four books in this series, starting with All Systems Red, go back and read those first. Those four books are novellas that complete one story arc, which this one follows.
This book, as a longer novel, had a more meandering start to it that put me off at first. But once the action picked up there was no tearing me away from Murderbot, A.R.T. or the other characters. Murderbot is still growing and changing as a "person" here, which is key. I think once it's done it's character growth arc, that will be the end of the series. The action was well drawn out and captivating as was the interactions between all of the characters, and the plot was intriguing and mysterious. On top of a great story and great characters, the narrator was fabulous, as always. I hear him now, and I think of Murderbot. He's got the perfect voice for a sarcastic, rogue sec unit. :-)If you haven't read or listened to the first four books in this series, starting with All Systems Red, go back and read those first. Classic Lanyon. I really enjoyed this. Felt like coming home, you know? It's hard to describe, but probably has to do with the fact that my reading has been so terrible this year and I've only recently found some books I'm enjoying, but I can always enjoy one of Josh's books. The mystery is fun though very short, and the romance was a sweet second chance that worked really well. This would not make for a good novel, but it was a perfect feel-good short story for sure. :-)Classic Lanyon. I really enjoyed this. Felt like coming home, you know? Title/Author: Bitter Legacy, Object of Desire, and Blue on Blue by Dal MacLean
Series/Standalone: Bitter Legacy series books 1-3
Genre/Sub-Genre: Mystery/Romance
Book Format: eBook
Length: Bitter Legacy: 350 pages, Object of Desire: 396 pages, & Blue on Blue: 407 pages
LGBTQ+ Orientation: Gay, Bisexual
Content Warnings: This series does get dark at times. In the final book there is an investigation into the sexual abuse of children and corrupt cops. Though it's been awhile since I've read the first two to remember the specifics of them. I will update this review when I get around to a reread.
Well-Written/Editor Needed: Very well written!
Would I Recommend?: YES
Personal thoughts: This review is for all three books. While it's been awhile since I read the first book and then the second, I just finished the third and wow, every time Dal Maclean blows me away with her writing style, the complexity of the characters, the plot, and the murder mystery. Yes, there's a romance here between two gay characters with an HEA, so many also consider this a romance novel. Please know the mystery is a major part of the plot as is the romance. :-) I had thought these books were standalone novels within the same universe, but when you get to the third novel, you realize they are tightly woven together and you really do need to read them in order, preferably one right after the other, or close enough that you don't forget the details. I will go back and reread them at some point so I can get the full effect for sure. But I do feel as if I need a break. The final book is a bit dark and very intense. Although, to be honest, I believe all three books are dark and intense. The suspense is very high here and all three were very hard to put down. If you like suspenseful/intense murder mysteries heavy on the police procedure and gay romance in your novels, I highly recommend this series!
And, if you liked this, and want more, check out Josh Lanyon's books, most notably her Adrien English mystery series that starts with Fatal Shadows.Title/Author: Bitter Legacy, Object of Desire, and Blue on Blue by Dal MacLean

Art/Illustrations: This was done with standard manga art, but it was well done and the artist was able to differentiate between the two similar-ish leads that I could tell them apart, which doesn't always happen for me in manga.
Would I Recommend?: Yes.
Personal thoughts: This was an adorable manga depicting two young men slowly falling in love over food with a younger brother (he's four-years-old) constantly being cute and getting in the way. Everything about this was sweet and good and realistic, right down to Yutaka's fears of losing loved ones. I appreciated that there was no sex, which sometimes goes overboard in a manga and sometimes ends up as the non-consensual variety. But not here. This was a beautiful and gentle love story. Title/Author: Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann
Series/Standalone: Standalone
Genre/sub-genre: Nonfiction/True Crime
Book Format: Hardcover
Length: 359 pages
Violence: Yes
Well written/Editor Needed: Very well written. This kept me turning pages and was an easy read, as it wasn’t dry writing. I’m not sure if this is entirely narrative nonfiction, but I appreciated his writing style. It felt like a western mystery novel for much of it.
Would I Recommend?: Yes, I believe more people need to know what happened, so that it doesn’t get forgotten, and so that we can avoid it happening ever again.
Personal thoughts: So, writing style-wise, this was a very easy read, and I couldn’t put it down. Topic-wise, it was a bit more difficult to get through. I went into it assuming a mass conspiracy on a grand level never before seen, only to have the case pinpoint one or two lead guys. Then, in the final section, my worst fears were, in fact, confirmed. The ending mad me sad and angry that this could happen; that men could talk so casually about marrying a woman just to murder her for her money as soon as possible. The fact that so many murders went uninvestigated, that those perpetrators got away with so much, and are now dead so that no justice can be found, or closure for their families, it’s horrifying and terrible and sad.
If this had been happening to white people, investigations would have happened and justice would have been found. I can’t even put into words how terrible this is. Between 1907 and 1923, 605 Osages died. Think about that. 605 Indians died within 16 years, and almost nothing was done about it. WTF.Title/Author: Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann

Personal Thoughts: This was a great beginning to a series and Cooper makes for a good protagonist as he changes over the course of the book, the more about werewolves he learns. There's a lot going on her, from the different cases being solved to learning about werewolves and Cooper's slow build relationship with Park. The mystery kept me guessing with so many interesting clues! In fact, there was a long time where I wondered if this mystery wouldn't take over the entire series. lol. The ending made sense though and I was able to put all the clues together and smack myself in the face for not getting it a little sooner perhaps. Then again, I was becoming very suspicious of everyone in that little town! I really liked Park for a romantic interest as well as a partner. He's a very calm, steady guy, but he's got his baggage too. I'm sure we'll learn more about him in the next book. The romance seemed to happen almost naturally, though it took awhile to heat up, but I appreciated that. No instalove here! I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and watching the two characters grow, romantically and personally.Title/Author: The Wolf at the Door by Charlie Adhara

Title/Author: Jackaby by William Ritter
Series/Standalone: Jackaby #1
Genre/sub-genre: Historical Paranormal Mystery, YA/New Adult
Book Format: paperback
Length: 299 pages
Violence: Yes, there is some on page violence.
Well written/Editor Needed: Definitely well written.
Would I Recommend?: Yes!
Personal thoughts: Loved this! Jackaby is clearly a young Sherlock in New England, who can see paranormal creatures. I appreciated that this incarnation of the great detective has a heart and occasionally shows that he cares, unlike others I’ve seen recently. Abigail makes for a good enough Watson, though she is a very different character. She is simply a young woman in search of an adventure and in desperate need of a job. But I like her. She has grit and determination with just enough unsuredness, if that’s even a word, to make it believable and realistic. I also really liked all the other characters who were well rounded and interesting. I was sad to see some of them go, and hope to see some of them again in the next book. The mystery was quite gripping and Jackaby did a lot of solving using Sherlock’s traditional method of deducting, but tuned to the paranormal, and it was all well done and believable. The budding romance between Abigail and another character, not Jackaby, was sweetly adorable, and I’m interested in seeing where it goes in future books.
As I was gifted the second book along with the first, I’m very excited to dive into it. This came out when I was still a teen librarian, and my library has it, which has me wondering how on earth I missed this until now? Some deducting might have to take place I think...Title/Author: Jackaby by William Ritter

This book is set up like a course, with exercises that go with each chapter. It may be helpful to know that the author's website (learntarot.com) came first, and the book is exactly the same thing as her website. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that the exercises are at the back of the book and not at the end of each relevant chapter, so you need to hunt them down. The website has the exercises linked at the end of each chapter/article.
I took this course with a group of friends, where we read the lessons aloud and then did the exercises together, often talking out the answers as a group. This was awesome! We broke the lessons up into five sections and met in person at the library for five weeks, back in January of this year. It was great to get the thoughts and opinions of others, and to be able to help figure out someone’s reading. The material is easy to understand and the lessons are short. The exercises are useful and fun too. I should emphasize that we had a lot of fun doing this and we learned a lot!
It's been many months since then, and I still talk with the group about tarot, we're still actively learning and I've cultivated a daily spread ritual into my routine that is still going strong. I don't read for other people, but rather for myself. I read the cards to know how to handle situations that might arise, whether it's dealing with a coworker or my own personal feelings getting in my way. lol. It's a great way to find self-care routines. It's also great to help me in my writing, so I can figure out character development or what should happen next in my story. There are so many useful reasons to read tarot cards and I can't wait to discover more! This book is set up like a course, with exercises that go with each chapter. I can't say I loved this. For the first half of the book I wanted to punch the plague doctor in the face, and I wanted the main character to forget the murder he was supposed to be solving and go read a book in the library instead. But things did pick up in the second half when we learn more about the murder and the family behind it. It turns out this book has so many twists I didn't see coming in the second half, and some that could easily have been something else with minimal replotting. I do applaud the author for keeping all the loose threads in place at the end! I wish the main character, a man, had slipped into at least one female body in this story. It's hard not to notice the lack of women here. Overall, this was a good book, an interesting book, even though I didn't love it, and I think it will bring an interesting discussion for my book group coming up. Also make note there is a lot of fatphobia here, so if that bothers you, you may want to skip this one.I can't say I loved this. An absolutely brilliant series!
Narrated by Kevin R. Free, who always does good work. Murderbot and I will become best friends someday! As an introverted, gender neutral, asexual human, I think we have more in common than Murderbot thinks. Lol. I love Murderbot's sense of humor, and I would also love to do nothing but watch episodes of Sanctuary Moon until the end of time. In fact, this show gets mentioned enough times that I really do want to experience it. Murderbot? Can I watch your entertainment feeds with you?
This first book was absolutely riveting, with lots of action and I was on the edge of my seat wondering if everyone would make it out alive, and I was sad to come to the end in such a short time. I will be moving on to book two as soon as time allows. Most of the characters are of color, which was a welcome surprise and many of them are in poly relationships, though they are sadly not explored here, and may not show up in the next book, the way this one ended. However, I’m very excited to see who Murderbot meets next!An absolutely brilliant series!

This is my second read of this book and I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last. The plot is suspenseful and gripping with a little romance thrown in for good measure. The balancing act favors the suspense but not to the detriment of the romance. There’s even a bit of humor here to lighten the mood every now and then. The main characters are well rounded and fun to read about, which sounds lame, but I really did like them! They complimented each other really well, especially with the enemies to love trope, which was handled with a great expertise. Merrick is my favorite type of butler/man servant and I love him dearly. And the magpies! It’s like being introverted but with an army of friends you can stand for long periods of time. Lol. Color me a tad bit jealous.

I have to admit, it's been a few years since I read this, but it has stuck with me! This is a story that might seem shallow on the surface, but dive underneath the water and you realize just how deep the mountains... er... themes... go. Nothing is ever black and white here, as the story unfolds we see just how grey the world really is. Extremely well written and very readable. Unfortunately, this story is not one of my favorites. (I fell asleep during the movie Troy when it was in theaters a million years ago.) It's just too long, not a lot happens, and I can't get behind the reasons for this war. Some scenes did grab my attention, and I liked the ending, but found most of the story to be skimable without feeling like I was missing out on anything. This is a series I love to reread a lot. It sounds odd, but this is almost like a comfort read to me by now. Vic always manages to make me feel better, no matter what's going on. Vic is a regular guy who just happens to be able to see and interact with ghosts. This is not something he enjoys doing, but it becomes his life work, as a Psycop. He's quirky in a humorous way, and his relationship with Jacob (another Psycop) is very realistic and fun to read about. All the side characters are well drawn too, and the mysteries are always gripping. These books are a tad bit scary, very mysterious, sexy as heck, and are very hard to put down. Please note that this is book one of an ongoing series. It's a novella, so be prepared to have the second book (Criss Cross) ready to go when you finish this one. I want to buy a copy for pretty much everyone I know!
Not every self-care idea out there will work for every single person, and this book acknowledges that! This is a giant A-Z list of ideas for self-care, whether you're completely down in the dumps feeling depressed, or feeling okay but know you still need to take care of yourself. These bite-sized portions cover things like gratitude and playlists to reaching out to friends and getting sleep. There are also some New Age ideas thrown in like reading the tarot to learn more about yourself. True self-care stories are sprinkled throughout, and extra information is included about a few things like "ways to nourish your body even when it's difficult" or a list of cognitive distortions. I especially like that these bits of information are so small. I imagine when life is really hard, one might not have the capacity to read at length on a subject and a little tidbit is all you need to give yourself a boost.
There's a lot packed into this little book: After the A-Z list, there's this really great chart that can help you figure out which self-care idea you should try depending on how you're feeling at any given time. I do wish this was at the front of the book though. It's so helpful! Behind that is a Therapist FAQ, that's perfect if you're looking to find a therapist and have questions about how to do that. Then there's a mental health crisis resource list and an online resource list of websites that includes places to get your medication when your finances are tight. Lastly, there is a list of recommended books including several memoirs and other self-help titles.
In short, I LOVE THIS!!!I want to buy a copy for pretty much everyone I know!

As I read White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo first, this was a really great follow up to it. I don't think you need to read them specifically in any order, they weren't meant to "go together", but honestly, they do go very well together as basic primers for understanding racism in America.
I listened to the audiobook and I really liked the narrator's voice. I could listen to her talk all day! I also liked how this book was written. The author did a good job of getting her point across in an easy to understand way that didn't beat around the bush.
