If you are a person that enjoys a lot of poetic distractions from the plot, you might enjoy this book. True, it is a book about a POET, Elizabeth Bishop, and the book chronicles the wanderings of her life, into descriptive paragraphs. Dialogue is printed without the usage of quotation marks. Takes place mainly in Paris, during the pre-WW II years. (The historical aspect was very interesting to me - what the French were expecting as far as the suspected Allied Invasion). The plot: Elizabeth tries to deal with her abusive childhood, attends Vassar, travels to Europe, becomes acquainted with alternative lifestyle females (women who love women). More should've been written about how Elizabeth and her friends helped smuggle Jewish babies out of areas about to be invaded. Later, Elizabeth returns to the U.S. and learns of the death of her elderly benefactor. Book should've been condensed 50% and I might have enjoyed the author's wandering style more. Interested to see if other, more patient readers, enjoy this novel.
