The Orville is part comedy, part science-fiction, with more than a nod or two to Star Trek as its inspiration. Season One is a bit uneven as it finds its footings, voice, audience, etc. The comedy can be good fun or painfully sophomoric (which, to me, drags it down). This is more evident in the first few episodes than later on. Growing pains. Story-wise, it's quite good. Very Trekkian in many ways. They borrow heavily for a couple of episodes from Star Trek and Dark Mirror but they put their own spin on things. Good plotting, mostly. Great character development. Fantastic make-up and first-rate special effects. Definitely worth watching twice. Once for sheer fun and adventure, then again for depth. Season Two, by the way, is more sober but with sprinklings of humour rather than comedy to break the tension.
