This novel puts life as being LGBTQ into perspective. We know not of the main character’s sexuality nor gender identity, but that makes it possible for readers to view love in it’s whole form without being burdened down with the social constructs of it. The love and longing was fluidly portrayed, and rings true in everyone regardless of where one may fall on the spectrum. After all, love is love. While ‘Brooklyn, Burning’ is not crystal clear and requires inferring to understand, the messages can be interpreted in anyway to be subjective to the reader. Approach with an open mind and the strong emotions will be sure to make lasting impressions.
