Nora, recently widowed, finds herself caring for her young grandson. The boy, apparently healthy at birth has started to decline mentally and physically. Nora turns to her neighbor Nance for help in curing the boy. Nance believes the boy to be a changeling and that the "good people" (fairies) are responsible for swapping him with the healthy child. When tragedy ensues, the women find themselves at the hands of a superstitious community judging them for meddling with magic. The reader was excellent; I did find the book to be rather slow paced and the plot predictable.
