By all technical standpoints, it's probably a three star read, where the characters are stock and the chain of events fairly predictable (tho one could argue that it just plays out the same way an episode would play out, and thus be forgiven for following the same tropes and pacing). And yet, it's FUN. It felt like Stranger Things, or an early episode of Supernatural, maybe even the better parts of Scooby Doo. The joy is in uncovering the monster mystery, going to weird locations, talking to weirder people, doing extensive research in a library with piles of textbooks, trying to convince an uninterested police that the teens know what's up, facing the Big Bad and doing some good, all covered in the glittery detritus of the era it takes place in.
