The Bolshoi theater began in the same year as the United States, 1776. This 400+ page book will tell you more about the Russian theatre and the ballet than you ever wanted to know. I enjoyed the book very much until I realized that the first 200 years occupies virtually the entire book with little attention to events in the last 50 years. I found that 15 pages devoted to 80 years of arguments about the staging of "Sparticus" were far too many and the fact that Rudolf Nureyev receives three sentences and Mikhail Baryshnikov only one was a true failure in the narrative.
