Hailed by #1 New York Times bestselling author A.J. Finn as "a dark jewel of a novel," Liz Nugent's new work of fiction follows three Irish brothers, and delves into the many ways families can wreak emotional havoc across generations.

All three of the Drumm brothers were at the funeral.
Only one of us was in the coffin.

William, Brian, and Luke: three boys bound by blood but split by fate, trained from birth by their wily mother to compete for her attention. They play games, as brothers do...yet even after the Drumms escape into the world beyond their windows, those games--those little cruelties--grow more sinister, more merciless, more dangerous. And with their lives entwined like the strands of a noose, only two of the brothers will survive.

Crisply written and quickly paced, perfect for readers of both sophisticated literary fiction and breathtaking suspense, Little Cruelties gazes unflinchingly into the darkness: the darkness collecting in the corners of childhood homes, hiding beneath marriage beds, clasped in the palms of two brothers shaking hands. And it confirms Liz Nugent, whose novels have been celebrated as "captivating" ( People ) and "highly entertaining" ( The Washington Post ), as one of the most exciting, perceptive voices in contemporary fiction.

The author has an unique style to tell a complicate story in an easy way. The plots rolling out in this family with three sons are compelling, but just like the quote at the very beginning of this book, " everyone has their reasons".

I like the author. But for me this book was not as exciting as the other books. It was just ok for me.

Wow, Liz Nugent has done it again. I wonder why one would enjoy a novel about unlikeable people - it’s her story telling, for one thing. If you don’t like unreliable characters behaving horribly yet humanly, then this is not the book for you. This book contains so much: drama, betrayal, addiction, madness, death. If any of those appeal to you then check out this unpredictable novel.

Little Cruelties by Liz Nugent paints a portrait of a dysfunctional family (with a capital D). The Drumm brothers of Dublin, Will, Brian and Luke have spent their childhood seeking love and approval from their mother, a selfish performer with a giant ego. This competition has driven a wedge between the brothers and they turn against each other, go out of their way to make the others miserable. This does not change when they become adults. The rivalry simply becomes more cruel. And this ends with two brothers attending the third brother’s funeral. Which one died and what caused his death? The narration is by each of the brothers, at different ages. This helps the reader get to know each one individually. This is dark family drama at its best: reading Little Cruelties is so fascinating that it is difficult to look away. Highly recommended to readers who enjoy family fiction with a helping of suspense. Thank you to Simon & Schuster, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Too angst ridden for my taste. Complex characters all totally unlikable.

This was an absolute train wreck of a book... and by that I mean this was such an insane, dysfunctional family. You won't be able to tear your eyes away! I'm a big fan of Liz Nugent!
