From radio broadcasting to game show host, Alex Trebek is one quick-witted, hard-working, bold-cursing, milk-drinking man. He has stated that he does NOT endorse or solicit any other books written about him or his life so I trust this biography to be his whole truth.
I'll admit it up front that I'm a hardcore Jeopardy fan and Alex Trebek has been a nightly visitor in my home for many years. Less a conventional biography and more a "here's my background and life philosophy" book, this quick read is lavishly illustrated. From his upbringing on the Ontario "Nickel Range" to his comfortable life in Los Angeles, Trebek admits that he's been a lucky guy in both his life and career. Written in a typical understated Canadian style, Trebek introduces you to his family and how they influenced him throughout his life. The grandson of Ukrainian immigrants, Trebek was working in his father's hotel kitchen at the age of 8. Although his parents divorced when he was young, Trebek maintained active, cordial relationships with his father in Canada and his mother in the U.S. The same pattern continued after his first divorce where he still maintains an active cordial relationship with his first wife and his stepdaughter. A 2019 Christmas dinner photo includes his wife, two children, ex-wife, stepdaughter, and his mother. Trebek majored in philosophy in college and has actively applied it in his everyday life since college. A lovely book by a lovely man.
I am a huge Jeopardy! fan. Thus I was eagerly looking forward to Alex Trebek's memoir. When I started the book I was a little disappointed because as he says himself, it is the story of a typical lower- middle class boy. But once he starts his description of his TV career in CBC and then in LA I got interested. The behind the scenes look at Jeopardy! and the stories from his 36 year stint at the game show were wonderful. His observations on his cancer are also poignant. You are sure to enjoy this book regardless of whether you are a Jeopardy! fan or not. I am sure all of his readers will wish him well and hope he continues as a host of Jeopardy! as long as he is able to.
I really enjoyed this book. Alex has lived a interesting , humble life. I admire him even more now. Behind the scenes look at Jeopardy.
