A REESE WITHERSPOON x HELLO SUNSHINE BOOK CLUB PICK A true-crime podcast sets a trophy wife's present life on a collision course with her secret past in this thriller from Denise Mina. The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life exploded started off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own -- a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life, a life she's taken great pains to leave behind. And she is convinced that she knows what really happened. Then an unexpected visitor arrives on her front stoop, a meddling neighbor intervenes, and life as Anna knows it is well and truly over. The devils of her past are awakened -- and in hot pursuit. Convinced she has no other options, she goes on the run, and in pursuit of the truth, with a washed-up musician at her side and the podcast as her guide. "Daredevil storytelling at its finest...Offers plot twists and zig-zags that take readers on a wild ride...A giddy celebration of the art of storytelling itself." --NPR's Fresh Air

A ridiculous story. Every character that gets more than 2 lines is unbelievable.
So many good novels around and somehow this one got the stars.
Don't bother reading it.

This is one of those stories where I didn't really like the main character at first, and if it weren't for my appreciation of Mina's writing I might have given up on it -- but with Mina I always know first appearances are just doors to a twisty journey that is both bizarre and elementally real. This story was a prime example of that -- when the story dives deeper after its ping-pong "surfacey" setup I found myself liking Anna even before she proves herself likable just because she's so strangely interesting. By the end of the book, I'd laughed out loud numerous times, gotten angry, and felt like hi-fiving Mina for another job well done--and yes, I do very much like Anna by the final page.

The well to do Anna McDonald is married to lawyer, Hamish, and has two young daughters, Jess and Lizzie. Anna is a true crime podcast obsessive, her latest one is entitled Death and the Dana, produced by Trina Keany. The Dana is a sunken yacht in the Bay of Biscay in which a murdered family, a father and his daughter and son, 21 year old Violetta and 16 year old Mark died, a tragic event shrouded in mystery and secrets. The Dana has a history of ghosts and tragedies that have sealed its reputation as a cursed vessel. On a morning that is to shatter her life apart, Anna is engaged in the everyday preparations for her family when her best friend, Estelle arrives. Hamish has a packed suitcase, he is leaving her for Estelle, taking Jess and Lizzie with him.

It soon becomes clear Anna has a troubled hidden past that has required her to live under the radar with a new identity. As Anna drowns in her overwhelming misery, she can focus only on the podcast, shocked when she recognises a name, a man she briefly knew when working at Skibo Castle, a man she is certain is a good person. To her surprise, Fin Cohen, Estelle's washed out ex-rock star husband, turns up on her doorstep. Fin is jittery and volatile, suffering from an anorexia that descended on him amidst his failure to handle his sudden meteoric fame and celebrity. Fin's appearance gives Anna a reason to rise above the mire of her personal horrors. Fin and Anna take off on a odd couple odyssey in which Fin becomes caught up in the unfolding crime podcast which has the two of them working together to solve the mystery behind the sunken Dana. However, social media and Fin's fame on Twitter threatens to expose Anna's traumatic past, bringing with it deadly dangers as they visit Skibo Castle, London, and go to the coastal resort of Saint Martin in France and Venice in Italy.

This sounded like such a good book. When I started it I felt like I'd missed something. That maybe there was a prequel or novella telling readers who the characters were. Apparently it is a stand alone. I had no clue who the characters were, it took forever to get to anyone's back story, Fin's anorexia seemed to only be a thread to add additional words -- it didn't move the story along. I didn't care about any of the characters and the writing was awful. I kept reading it because I kept waiting for it to get better, that there would be something solid in the story. It never happened.

It was very good and true crime-ish. the main character Anna is a house wife and mother. Her husband leaves her for her best friend. Anna becomes obsessed with a true crime podcast alongside the arrival of her best friends husband. They set out on a journey together, reluctant to travel together. Slowly the connection of Anna to the podcast becomes apparent, revealing their situation ever more dangerous.

I have always liked Denise Mina's writing but this book captured my interest early and did not let it go. I read it in a day and half. I could not put it down. The story is original but also gripping. Highly recommend it.

I honestly can't pinpoint a reason I didn't like this book. Maybe the sheer impossibility of it, the evil murderous villain or the plot twist at the end. It was a quick read, because I was genuinely interested in how it would end. The narrator's voice is interesting. But overall, wasn't a favorite, especially for a Reece Witherspoon book club pick.

If I told you their names you'd think you know me. You don't. I'm not going to talk about that night at the hotel in Soho. I will not name the footballers. I will not specify which London club they played for. You can go elsewhere for all of that. pg. 177

Instagram made me do it. I was influenced to read Conviction by Reese Witherspoon and I checked it out from my public library. There is so much mystery and wittiness in the book and I just loved the relationship between the characters Anna and Fin! As an ESL reader the book was perfect for me to read. The vocabulary was rich and challenging yet it did not intimidate me.

Conviction is a fast paced mystery, a total page turner and one of those books that you just have to grant yourself five more minutes. Then the day is over and you read until your eyes can't stay open.

Anna McDonald is obsessed with reading and listening to true crime podcasts (who isn't). One early morning before her husband and her girls wake up she is listening to an episode about a murder mystery on a sunken yacht, The Dana. The doorbell rings, Anna opens the door and it's her best friend with a suit case. At that same time her husband is coming down the stairs also with a suitcase. He is leaving Anna for her best friend and he is taking the girls. He can't deal with Anna's strange personality. Anna has a history. Mystery #1!

To self medicate Anna continues to listen to the podcast and realizes that she knows the man who was murder on The Dana. To take her mind off her personal tragedy Anna takes it upon herself to solve the murder on The Dana by investigating and traveling all over Europe. Mystery #2!

I really enjoyed reading this book, I was completely invested in trying to solve the mystery before Anna and Fin did.

There is a Trigger Warning that I want to caution you about. I'm not sure if it would spoil the book so let me know if you want me to tell you what it is.
