From the moment Lucy met her husband’s mother, she knew she wasn’t the wife Diana had envisioned for her perfect son. Exquisitely polite, friendly, and always generous, Diana nonetheless kept Lucy at arm’s length despite her desperate attempts to win her over. And as a pillar in the community, an advocate for female refugees, and a woman happily married for decades, no one had a bad word to say about Diana…except Lucy. That was five years ago. Now, Diana is dead, a suicide note found near her body claiming that she longer wanted to live because of the cancer wreaking havoc inside her body. But the autopsy finds no cancer. It does find traces of poison, and evidence of suffocation. Who could possibly want Diana dead? Why was her will changed at the eleventh hour to disinherit both of her children, and their spouses? And what does it mean that Lucy isn’t exactly sad she’s gone? Fractured relationships and deep family secrets grow more compelling with every page in this twisty, captivating new novel from Sally Hepworth. Praise for Sally Hepworth: “With jaw-dropping discoveries, and realistic consequences, this novel is not to be missed. Perfect for lovers of Big Little Lies.” —Library Journal, starred review "Hepworth deftly keeps the reader turning pages and looking for clues, all the while building multilayered characters and carefully doling out bits of their motivations." —Booklist

I loved this fast paced mystery/thriller. I really enjoyed the different perspectives and how feelings and actions can be so misinterpreted by different people. Such a good book!

Wow! Totally not what I was expecting...much, much better.
I definitely had a hard time putting this book down.
Wonderful mystery with a GREAT ending.

Part thriller, part family drama. I listened to the audiobook, which includes an interview with the author, and she discusses how her books address women's health. This one is heavy with discussions about mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships, infertility, stay-at-home vs. working moms, depression, and more. It's one of those books that illustrates why you can't judge someone without walking in their shoes (or hearing their side of the story in a great book)!

This book is quite the page turner. If you like juicy soap opera kind of stories that grow and grow in suspense, you will love this book.

A comment from another reviewer here has given me pause about how the subject of women with fertility issues is perceived by the author. However, when thinking about it more, it seems like there are separate issues going on for the character...

Wonderful read!

I love Sally Hepworth and this book did not disappoint. It made me really consider how other interpret my actions and how I interpret theirs. Sometimes things are not how we perceive.

I am really not understanding all the positive reviews for this book. I found it to be patched together in several places, and the character of Nettie offended me on behalf of all women struggling with infertility.

This book was not what I thought it was going to be... I thought it would be a thriller (according to the creepy woman in the window on the cover!) But, it was more a story of familial struggles and different perspectives of family dynamics. I really didn't know how it would end, and although it was rather heartbreaking, it is a great book, particularly if you liked family stories with a mystery element like Big Little Lies or Little Fires Everywhere. I loved the way it ended! I will be looking for Sally Hepworth’s other books.
