This heartbreaking and honest look into Macy's life is both difficult to read and a needed look into parental neglect, poverty, extreme hunger, and the power of friendship that can sometimes drive Macy to extreme measures. Macy's story is told in dictionary journal entries and chronicles the loss of her little brother to the foster care system, her father's imprisonment, and her mother's disinterest in her own children's wellbeing. The only breath of love in Macy's life comes in the form of a caring teacher, an amazing boy named George with a brain injury, and Alma who has all the potential to succeed, but it drowning in the pressure of it all. This book will haunt you with the thoughts of being so hungry you lick ketchup splatters off walls and loving your friends so much that your loyalty leaves scars.
