It's not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that served as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She was just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that didn't look anything like the one she'd grown up in, the one that had been perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago. There are worse threats in the woods than the things that stalk their prey at night. Sometimes, there are men. Men with dark desires, weak wills, and evil intents. Men in uniform with classified information, deadly secrets, and unforgiving orders. And sometimes, just sometimes, there's something worse than all of the horrible people and vicious beasts combined. Red didn't like to think of herself as a killer, but she wasn't about to let herself get eaten up just because she was a woman alone in the woods...

I loved this post apocalyptic twist on the classic Little Red Riding Hood story. It was brutal, suspenseful, heartbreaking and kick ass. Red is someone I would aspire to be during an apocalypse. For fans of dystopian fiction like The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

The Girl in Red is quite a good read, thrilling and creative, what a fun way to retell the story of Little Red Riding Hood! I hadn't previously read Christina Henry and now I definitely need to check out her other books!
I really enjoyed this post-apocalyptic read! I haven't read as many of them this year as I'd like and this brought my interest back for sure!
This version of Red is no simpering coward let me tell you! She is strong and tough against a world that has thrown her nothing but curveballs!
This story is told through multiple timelines: Before and After which really well showed the mindset changed and how dire things had become!
Overall such a good story but I could have done with a teensy bit more closure like an epilogue or something! That might just be me as the story did wrap up well!

Grandmas didn't die from stuff like that. Grandmas went on and on, enduring year after year, shriveled and worn but somehow ageless.

One thing Red had learned from years of reading and movie watching was that people were far scarier than any disease or zombie or alien or face-eating monster.
