Excellent movie to watch , sad in parts , but a very well done , touching heart felt story . Do watch to the very end to see the real life teacher and students and other characters and the write up of how each is doing now .

A very realistic portrayal of a group of Nunavut teenagers in 2004-2005 who overcame their suicidal tendencies by joining a lacrosse team.

This was absolutely fantastic! As someone who doesn't like sports, I sure do like a sport story, especially since they are so often about more than sports. In the case of Grizzlies, it was a story of a community, their struggles, and how one teacher was able to make an impact by bringing his students together. While this movie had heartbreaking moments, it was ultimately uplifting offering a sense of hope to the community in Nunavut.

Based on a true story. A new teacher, paying off his loan for university by working for a year in the north, moves to an Inuit community where the suicide rate is the highest in Canada. He is faced with dealing with truancy, suicide, domestic violence, teenagers leaving school to keep with the traditional way of life, starvation, and other teenage angst. Frustrated and ready to head back south he decides to face the student and other community problems by starting lacrosse training, a sport that he excelled at and the national sport of Canada. Meanwhile, the Inuit community assists him in the mannerism and the proper way of Inuit customs and behaviours as well as the culture of the Inuit. Slowly with the help of student Miranda, who is the most instrumental in decifering for him the Inuit culture, he gathers together the students to start training. Finally, the youth of the community have something to work toward. This movie starts very slowly to the point I almost gave up, but keep going, the story is honest, at times heart wrenching, and despite so many road blocks a final small win for the students, and community. Very well done. A stark movie of the Inuit today.
