I found this movie interesting but there were some things in the end that I am still confused about. Maybe it's the language difference.

I usually like Hirokazu Kore-eda's movies, but this one is very slow paced, unbelievable, and boring! It won awards? Really? Thumbs down.

~A topic that I've never seen addressed. A family formed by elder choice, bond, sans being blood. Are we who we are due to who raised us? Perhaps likely. A twisted, touching tale, with an ending that inquires "Who truly inspire's an individuals life? What is just, after witnessing the abuse of a child? Are parents that wish they never were, deserving of said title?" Love, affection, guidance & bonding is but one recipe for a family. Compelled to watch twice, just to further catch the tales twist's & turns performed by these talented actors. Give this one a shot, well worth watching.

Exotic, touching and thought provoking. Who can judge another’s life? There by the grace of god go I.

I know it got a lot of awards, or was at least nominated, but I guess only highly sophisticated and intelligent people get this one. I am not and I did not. I think it is about people doing what they have to each day to make it through another day. Not really sure though.

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda in 2018, this Japanese drama depicts a family life of shoplifters.
The story appears ill-contrived and unbelievable, and the film seems too slow-paced.
I like Kore-eda's films, but this movie seems to me the worst among his movies I've viewed so far.

I had no previous knowledge as to the story, no expectations and to my disappointment there were no special features for discussion. I felt the actors were excellent, which I later read up on the mains. I found it unsettling and realize my ignorance about how poverty & homelessness exists in highly developed countries such as Japan. The 'family' existed by their wits just to survive each day, lived, literally, hand to mouth. This is a thoughtful film, not especially uplifting.

This has been described as simply put, but to me it is immensely complex and did not lead me to any 'conclusion' about the characters or their situation, other than they were rendered as understandable human beings.
Today was another day in which a young man was in the news for shooting many people. It would seem family life is the setting in which these assassins mature. Parents are adults who have found a way, often, of coping with a complex world. But as they are doing so, are they missing important developments in their children? When we consider the number of cases where children seem to go amiss, fortunes are spent on therapy and medication, we might wonder whether going on in trusting the typical pattern is safe any more?
In part, the home schooling movement might be a reaction to these concerns.
Some say, 'only connect'; today it is clear many think they must find their real connections outside the family. Many parents may be blinded to the trouble ahead because, on the way, their children lay golden eggs for them. There is little time to think.
I was 'lulled' by a long stretch from the beginning; the last half hour or so is heart work.

As someone who enjoys foreign films I wanted to get my hands on this well-reviewed one. I did, and found it to be enjoyable if less than compelling. In fact, I turned it off mid-way through only to resume watching the following day. It presents a nice, interesting story that moves along not quite slowly but also not swiftly. Though someone told me they thought this film was a masterpiece I did not. 4 stars out of 5 I'd say, but if you're looking for a thoughtful foreign film, have a look.

Do you think she... chose us?
-Usually, you can't choose your own parents. But then, maybe it's stronger when you choose them yourself.
What is?
- What is... The bond.
===
But sometimes, it's better to choose your own family. If only not to have expectations...
===
The reason they hit you... isn't because you are bad. If they say they hit you
because they love you, that is a lie. If they love you, if they really love you, this is what you do... This is what you do... (hugging her tight...)
===
But won't they get mad at you?
-No different if I go back now.
===
We're... connected in our hearts, not down here.
-Cut it out! Sounds fishy.
How do you think we're connected?
-Money.
Normally... But we're not normal.
