THE START OF A BRAND NEW URBAN FANTASY SET IN SMALL TOWN MAINE WHERE EVERYTHING IS NOT AS IT SHOULD BE... Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human. Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend, " Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire. It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie's lamp. If you love Sookie Stackhouse, then you'll want to dive into Nicole Peeler's enchanting debut novel.

Tempest Rising #1 was a nice building block book for the next books in the series--which are AWESOME! I hope the library buys all the e-books in the series.
The author gives you hints that the heroine is at the very beginning of being a "work-in-progress" personality-wise, dating-life-wise, man-choices, etc.
In book #1, our heroine is a very awkward nerd, stagnating, getting worse, hiding from life, letting herself get kicked around by the town bullies. Suddenly all heck breaks loose for her, things start changing for her, and she becomes empowered to take control as well.

This book is enormous fun. Full disclosure -- I taught a seminar with Peeler in Pittsburgh, where he wits kept everyone active. The novel shares in that energy. It's great fun but also surprisingly clever without making you trip over the cleverness (which too many folks can do...).
