Wait, is it 90s revival time? Oh snap! Jonah Hill's debut film doesn't really need to be set in the 90s, but he clearly wanted to use music of the period (Pixies, Nirvana, Cypress Hill) and vintage skatewear. I don't really get skateboarding or skate culture, so I couldn't get into this coming of age movie. It wasn't bad, but it felt very familiar, and I didn't really like the main kid's exploration of drinking, partying, drugs, girls, and skate dudes. Ne-Kel Smith as the de facto head of the skate gang was good; Katherine Waterston as the mom and Lucas Hedges as the sullen brother were underdeveloped. For depictions of teen life, I preferred "Eighth Grade" and the show "Pen15."

In what was a highly anticipated indie film release of 2018, I found that when I watched it, I became quickly unamused. mid90s is not meant to push the whole 90s lexicon onto the viewer, even though the title may say so. Yes, this film is meant to be taking place in the mid-90s, however you will not see items thrust upon your senses to immerse you into believing so.

It's subtle, for example...

Yes, nobody is seen staring at a cell phone

No, there are no shots of a Blockbuster Video Store

Yes, there are moments where people are shown buying music CDs

No, you will not see people using dial-up Internet complete with those annoying log-on sounds

Yes, there are scenes involving young men riding on skateboards because it's their way of enjoying life

No, you will not see people watching MTV music videos or Total Request Live

This again, is meant as a small insight into a young boy's life as he tries to cope with living with his single parent, Mom and his older intimidating brother.

But...as a Director, Jonah Hill just doesn't quite engage me enough to keep my attention for the entire film. I found myself slowly tuning out after about an hour and just merely glancing back and forth from my computer to the TV. I understand what he was trying to convey, but it just didn't keep me interested.

this movie is very good it has a very good story line. the thing is about the kids to drugs and other stuff is becuse it makes it look like he is do what he enjoys if doesnt enjoy with friend like him or more older he mite be a better kid. in this movie he is very childish at first then he becomes more of a big kid that is responsable. and he just is just having a great time. but over all i dont want children to see this becuse they wont understand it. i think the ages for this movie is 16 years or older.

Basically a coming-of-age story set in Los Angeles California in the mid 90s. It got mostly positive reviews everywhere, but to me, it's only 2.5 stars out of 5 (50%). I think it is a heavily autobiographic picture based on the director's life (Jonah Hill wrote it and directed it). There are two similar movies that I watched recently (Eighth Grade (2018), and To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)), and I liked them much better than mid90s. This kind of story either "clicks" with the viewer (because similarities), or it's hard even to get into it. I guess mid90s didn't click with me.
