As mounting tensions between China and the United States push the world's two great powers to the brink of war, it falls to President Jack Ryan to identify the lethal chess master behind the scenes in this thriller in Tom Clancy's #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Jack Ryan is dealing with an aggresive challenge from the Chinese government as the G20 Summit approaches. Pawns are being moved around a global chessboard: an attack on an oil platform in Africa, a terrorist strike on an American destroyer and a storm tossed American spy ship that may fall into Chinese hands. It seems that Premier Zhao is determined to limit Ryan's choices in the upcoming negotiations.

But there are hints that there's even more going on. A routine traffic stop in rural Texas leads to a shocking discovery--a link to a Chinese spy who may have intelligence that lays bare an unexpected revelation. John Clark and the members of the Campus are in close pursuit, but can they get the information in time?

Here is a prime example of what people used to call pulp fiction: seedy, violent fiction with limited imagination but loaded with technical descriptions of guns, motorcycles, airplanes and other toys that many American men enjoy; NRA devotees probably love pedestrian literature like this. Furthermore, Power and Empire is also a fraud because it is not written by Tom Clancy and so his name should not show as an author; Marc Cameron is the author and he is not as good as Clancy was. Berkeley is a subdivision of Penguin Books and Penguin Books ought to be chastised for participating in a publishing deception like this.

The subject matter in Power and Empire is contemporary, involving drug trafficking by Chinese blackguards and CIA-like agents sleuthing against them, saving the world.

I am generally not a fan of "books by committee" where a known author takes his idea and farms it out to another writer to do the leg work, or, in this case, books where an author's vision and characters are taken over posthumously by other authors. However er, in this, I am willing to make an exception. This book is not only well written, crisp, and tense, but it feels like something Clancy might have written himself. I truly enjoyed this book. I hope Cameron writes another one.

Marc Cameron takes the helm of a Jack Ryan novel, as has been the case for several books since the death of Tom Clancy (and realistically beforehand, as he'd been working with co-authors for some time). Weaving together narratives with President Ryan confronting enigmatic moves by a new Chinese government with the Campus operators hunting down a human trafficking ring, the book is helped along by putting a fair amount of emphasis on John Clark, with nods to his past providing motivations for his actions in this story.

Less action and more character development which was a nice change of pace. Faded into the end IMO though.
