On an unforgiving, snow swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski Nosferatu, For a Few Dollars More) prey on a band of persecuted outlaws who have taken to the hills. As the price on each head is collected one-by-one, only a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant The Conformist) stands between the innocent refuges and the greed and corruption that the bounty hunters represent. But, in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong aren't always clear and good doesn't always triumph. Featuring superb photography and a haunting score from maestro Ennio Morricone, director Sergio Corbucci's bleak, brilliant and violent vision of an immoral, honorless west is widely considered to be among the very best and most influential Euro-Westerns ever made.

Directed and co-written by Sergio Corbucci in 1968, this Spaghetti Western depicts the struggle between the bounty hunters and the refugees in Utah prior to the Great Blizzard of 1899.
Although the character of a mute gunslinger seems unique, the story appears like a typical Spaghetti Western with an awful lot of tiring bang-bang in the bleak and dark tone.

Kinda sorta liked parts of it - I like the Sergio Leoni stuff but this isn't in the same league. The big selling feature was a snowbound western. Riding the poor horses through deep snow may have seemed like a good idea, but really? Same as killing the sheriff with a frozen rifle? His is frozen and can't fire when he meets the outlaws early in the movie, but Loco's is stored in the snow and fires fine later in the movie... Am I missing something?

Highlights of this very bleak Italian spaghetti western include its exquisite cinematography.

A very slow - except for the mass killing scenes - movie with beautiful scenery and nice music.

What's considered one of the greatest spaghetti westerns outside of anything Leone has directed ( Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in the West ). The sinister vibes, the haunting soundtrack, and that damn snow. Everything in this Corbucci masterpiece made this movie a spectacle to the genre. Hands down even if you aren't a spaghetti western fan then you should still dedicate your time to this film.

Beautiful, bloody, and bleak spaghetti western starring Klaus Kinski and Jean-Louis Trintignant and directed by Sergio Corbucci, sometimes known as "the other Sergio." Ennio Morricone, of course, does the score. Do not miss this one if you're a fan of the genre.
