After the frightful events of last autumn, seventeen-year-old Louisa Ditton has settled into her role as a maid at Coldthistle House, but she has not settled into what that means for her humanity. As Louisa struggles to figure out whether she is worthy of redemption, the devilish Mr. Morningside plans a fete--one that will bring new guests to Coldthistle House. From wicked humans to Upworlders, angelic beings who look down on Mr. Morningside's monstrous staff, all are armed with their own brand of self-righteous justice. Even a man claiming to be Louisa's father has a role to play, though what his true motive is, Louisa cannot tell. The conflicts will eventually come to a head on the grounds of Coldthistle House--and the stakes include Louisa's very soul.

The book because tends to go on aimlessly for some time. There's a few plot points stories that I wish were given just a bit more attention e.g. I would have loved to read the entirety of Bennu's journal. I definitely wanted to know more about the history between Mr. Morningside and the shepherd.

The tone of the series reminds me of the Graveyard Queen series by Amanda Stevens. The writing's not spectacular, nor is the story out of this world, but the atmosphere and the characters just make it interesting enough to read and enjoy.

Not as spooky as its prequel, but, I love Louisa and the inhabitants of Coldthistle, and I am super excited to read the next book.

This is the 2nd book in the House of Furies series by Madeleine Roux. Although slow to start, readers should stick with this dark and dramatic tale filled with strange tales and creepy monsters. I especially enjoyed the weird and disturbing pictures at the beginning of each chapter. A good pick for fans of Gothic horror.
