Dream of the Red Chamber is one of the four Chinese classics. The novel is semi-autobiographical and it gives an incredibly detailed insight into 18th-century life in China, particularly that of the aristocracy. The plot is grand in scale, peopled with a complex array of characters.

I found the translation stilted. As a result, I had no real sense of the quality of what is highly regarded as a masterpiece in Chinese Literature. I hope the library will soon get the much better Penguin edition translated byDavid Hawkes.

Difficult to read and follow due to the fact that it's of Eastern literature... Good book otherwise

This is the 1892-93 translation by H. Bencraft Joly, with a few minor corrections and conversion of transliterations from Wade-Giles to pinyin. He passed away before completing it, so there are only 56 chapters out of 120.

Although the translation is evidently quite faithful, I found it essentially unreadable, perhaps because it is too literal. In any case, I could not get into the story at all, and will be looking for a more modern translation.
