Before publishing this book, Manchester took it to friends who were Medieval scholars. One and all panned it and urged him NOT to publish it as it was rife with historical errors. Manchester ignored that advice and published the book. Sadly, because of his previous reputation, the book sold well and those errors have been absorbed by the reading public as if they were an accurate reflection of an extremely complex period. No one who is actually interested in this topic should select this book for its historical veracity. There are many others, better researched and written out there.

When an author of a history book states that he has used only secondary sources, is writing about a period with which he is unfamiliar, makes universal statements about his subject apparently without foot- or end-notes and has a bibliography from the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th century, then that's a history book to avoid.

As the subtitle says, its the portrait of an age, and as the introduction says, it has no scholarly pretensions. The book is comprised of a series of two to three page essays on social norms, personages, events, etc., with some important ones (reformation and Luther) getting several. The last chapter is a brief biography and assessment of Magellan. On the whole, a readable, pleasant book.
