Brilliant little movie. No wonder this film cleaned up at the Canadian Film awards. It's too bad films about Canadians can't be acted by them. Again we see leads from other countries (in this case England and the US as well as an Irish director), however a great film is exactly that regardless. It's refreshing to see something approximating real life produced by the film industry these days. For viewers who enjoy sex, violence, super-hero action etc etc take a pass on Maudie!

Sally Hawkins does an amazing job of bringing the fascinating story of Canadian artist Maud Lewis to life. The movie inspired me to find out more about Lewis and her life in Nova Scotia. I am planning to read The Heart on the Door : A Biography of Maud and Everett Lewis and Digby County, Nova Scotia.

Very loosely, based on the real
Maud Lewis.
She was a great Canadian Folk artist.
She was the ultimate optimist .
An angel, on earth.
Sally Hawkins acting was incredible.
Ethan Hawke's best performance, ever.

"Maudie" your a prize winner!! Few movies have moved me like this film shot on location in Newfoundland! The attention to small details is amazing. I won't ruin any part of the film by telling you more. I have seen many movies over the years. Few have left such a lasting impression as "Maudie"!
P.S. Thanks to the 301 KCLS patrons who currently have holds on a copy of "Maude"! It does my heart good to see the demand for something I hold so dear to me!

Quiet, subtle, sometimes dismal, it is ultimately a love story. No action, little tension, very slow moving, but very, very sweet. It was a good movie.

I watch this movie once, and then I watch it a second time. I was fabulous. She was such a strong woman and role model. It is a must see. Highly recommended by me.

PERFECT. Sally Hawkins is perfect as Maude Lewis and inhabits the character as wholly as I have ever seen any actress ever do, even among the greats. Ethan Hawke is also perfect as Everett Lewis - they both brought me to tears often. We laughed with them and we cried with them and he made me hate him more than once - a couple of times I could have killed him! My response to this movie was visceral and I was so moved by their portrayals of the central characters that it kept me awake. Supporting characters were good as well and it was nice to see Zachary Bennett, an old friend from Road to Avonlea, again.
Run, do not walk, to see this thoughtful, sensitive, Canadian film. No CGI, no explosions or car chases though: just dirt poor, simple, everyday people living their lives during a very hard time in history. Maybe the best Canadian film I have ever seen.

Loved it.

This may not be for everyone, so Hollywood block-buster fans beware, no CG special effects here- this is real film at its finest.

A true Canadian story of an oppressed lovely woman and her quest to survive. Heart breaking, hopeful and beautiful if you don't fall in love with Maudie and this film check your pulse.

Ethan Hawke was AMAZING as was Sally Hawkins, who you don't even think isn't Maudie for a minute. I am a fan.
