Fantastic actors, love that it’s a true story (and shows his real wife in the credits, and love that the main character is actually the guy in real life. I’m not not usually into romantic movies, but this was great, and showed a lot about diverse cultures.

Pretty good movie but kind of slow and boring at time!

This romantic/drama film is about a Pakistani comic with very strict Muslim parents. After he meets a young girl named Emily at one of his comedy shows and starts to fall in love with her, he becomes fearful of the reaction of his parents. Suddenly, she ends up in a coma and he is left to form a bond with her parents. This movie questions the way that humans interact as well as how far the love for a person can go. I will admit that some plot points and scenes were disappointing compared to what I was expecting, however, the overall premise of the movie did a great job at tying different cultures together and of making this a movie that everyone can enjoy. I would rate this film 4/5 stars @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Okay, I got the rom part, but the comedy part? Ah not so much, or at all. This film is so slow and predictable, I didn't even bother to finish it. Why all the hype?

I personally felt like this was more of a romance than a comedy. The main character's comedy is awkward and not very good, which is suppose to show a lot about his character, but I looked up his real comedy and it's WAY better.

The movie is also WAY too long. I get it, as the writers, they wanted people to feel the awkward emotions, but it gets a little repetitive. Still, it has some great moments and I really liked it overall. I just wish the other writer (his real wife) was the actress instead of the actress portraying her...

Despite Zoe Kazan being one of my favorite actresses, I was a little let down by this movie. Having heard such good things, I was expecting a 5/5 film. There was plenty of good here. The humor was on point. The story was compelling. It touched on difficult topics without being boring. Perhaps my only issue with the movie was the chemistry, or lack-thereof, between the two leads. Their relationship felt completely artificial. It skipped over large segments of the relationship and expected us to fill in the gaps. That made their motivations in the final third of the film seem forced.

That said, I still very much enjoyed the movie. The relationship between Kumail and his girlfriend's parents made the movie worth a watch alone.

As I watched, I just kept thinking I'd already seen dozens of earlier versions of this movie. Two quirky (or one is quirky, the other conventional) individuals meet, become a couple much too quickly, face challenges from their families, with each other, it's funny, it's serious, etc. etc. This rom-com formula has been followed way too many times by now, esp. since the 1980's.

Worth watching considering that this is based on a true story. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter were great as well as the actors who played the protagonist's parents.

Finally watched “The Big Sick” the other day. I liked it, but I can’t imagine why this movie was successful. No car chases? No superheroes? No flying monsters? No explosions? No doomsday scenario for the total destruction of the Earth? No aliens? No Ryans? (It only seems like every movie has a Gosling or Reynolds in it, I guess.) There is something else “The Big Sick” does not have. It has none of the stupidity that sometimes is passed off as comedy. The humor in “The Big Sick” seems natural and unforced; it is not of the a-few-sophomoric-meaningless-yuks-every-minute variety. This movie also has a sizable chunk of drama (“big sick” refers to a serious illness incurred by one of the main characters), and there are enough cringe-worthy situations here and there to allow the audience to identify with the ups and downs and think that this is kind of the way life is much of the time. The lead character, Kumail, happens to be a stand-up comedian, but the movie is not about that, it is about connecting with that special someone, and recognizing that connection before it is too late. Sometimes, people do not realize what they had until it has been lost. “The Big Sick” stands as an acknowledgement that a true measure of success is being able to overcome the obstacles that the universe inevitably will put in love’s way.

This is very good and a movie I'm sure I'll want to see again.

I grew up in Pakistan. And people are always asking me, what was that like? Really not that different from here. I mean, we played cricket, which is just a spicier version of baseball. And we prayed a lot. Well, not a lot. Just five times a day. And we marry someone our parents find for us, arranged marriage, you know? But for me, it was probably that we got episodes of knight rider a little bit later. And by "little bit later," I mean we just got episode two.

I was in bed with my girlfriend and I was trying to mansplain to her that, you know, we-we are on one little rock orbiting one star in a galaxy of a billion stars in a universe full of a billion galaxies. You know, so I forgot your birthday. Who gives a shxt? Like, you are cosmically overreacting to this.

But yelling anything at a comedian is considered heckling. Heckling doesn't have to be negative.
=So, if I, if I yelled out, like, "you're amazing in bed!" That'd be a heckle?
Yeah. It would be an accurate heckle.
===
They called me Chashmullee.
-What is that?
It roughly translates to "dweeb."
===
We haven't even had sex again yet.
-Yeah, I'm just not that kind of girl. I only have sex once on the first date.
===
Oh. I wonder who that could be.
- Yeah.
Let me check.
- I don't know. I'm guessing it's a young, single Pakistani woman who just happened to be driving by our house, which is on a cul-de-sac.

I never knew that Pakistan had the world's largest irrigation system.
-Yeah, something like 14 million hectares are being irrigated.

What's the whole thing with Muslims growing beards, anyway? It's such an arbitrary thing, right? Like, who decided that, oh, we have to have beards.
-Oh. But you'll do... So, there's a billion of us and you're the only one with the truth. Is that right? So, the sun is just shining down on you right now. It's just parting.
You know, I have to tell you something, bhai.
-Here we go. Yeah.
I've been dating this girl.
-Sure.
She's white.
- Oh. I thought you were gonna say you were involved in a hit-and-run or you got caught forging some checks, but a white girl?! … Listen, I understand. You're in America, and you want to mow a few lawns and see what it's like, but eventually you have to marry a Pakistani girl.

You know what we call arranged marriage in Pakistan, Emily?
-Marriage.
Okay? We just call it marriage. There's another type of marriage. It's called love marriage and that's bad. My cousin, Rehan, married an Irish woman and he was kicked out of the family. Nobody is allowed to talk to him.
====
People say, "Sam... You're gonna love it. This kid, you're gonna have a kid, he's gonna be your best friend." A best friend that-that pukes on you and shxts everywhere and is constantly screaming. I already have friends like that.

When I was a kid, piece of chalk and a pavement, and that's your entertainment. Hopscotch. Tic-Tac-toe. Throw the chalk at Jimmy. There you go. Three games right there.
===
I want to name my kid void so he won't be able to cash any of his paychecks. "I'm sorry, sir, this says void on it." "But that's my name. Curse you, father!"
===
Why did you bring me here if you wanted me to not have an American life? We come here, but we pretend like we're still back there. That's so stupid.
- Don't you talk to your mother like that.
You don't care what I think. You just want me to follow the rules. But the r... the rules don't make sense to me. I don't pray. I don't. I haven't prayed in years. I just go down there and I play video games.
-You don't believe in Allah?
I don't know what I believe, dad. I don't know. And I can't marry someone you find for me.
-And why not?
Because I am in love with someone. I am. Her name is Emily
