She hadn't told anyone. Not a single soul. Not one word about that night and what had been done to her had ever passed Maddy Malone's lips. She'd thought about it at first - had been desperate, even frantic, to tell. But then had come the shame, and the intimidation from the boys who raped her - and the one who held her down. Now it's the beginning of a new school year and Maddy is hoping that she can continue to hide, making herself as quiet and small as possible. She is consumed with keeping the memories at bay, forcing them down through small cuts and the burn from the end of a cigarette. But when her English class is given the assignment of writing a collaborative novel about a fifteen-year-old girl, The Pain Eater, fact and fiction begin to meet up. When the boys spread rumors about Maddy, she realizes that continuing to hide the truth will only give them more control, and she slowly gains the courage to confront them.

A sad story about a girl named Maddy Malone who all so suddenly gets raped by five masked figures in the middle of spring as she’s walking home. She feels the only way to deal with her pain is to burn cigarettes into her thighs, however that won’t help her too much when grade 10 begins and she quickly learns two people involved with the incident are in her English class. Every page you turn, you learn more and more about the pain and struggle Maddy is dealing with which connects to the book her English class is working together to write, which happens to be called The Pain Eater. Maddy learns the only people that know about what happened are the people that were there, this quickly changes when rumours begin to spread about the cause. As Maddy feels she needs to keep the incident to herself and continue to harm herself, she begins to open up and learn how serious this issue is and that there are many people around her who will stand next to her and support her every step of the way. A heartbreaking story I would strongly recommend. 3/5
