In the summer of her 28th year, Edna Pontellier and her children, along with the wives and families of other prospective businessmen, spend the summer in an idyllic coastal community away from their husbands and the sweltering heat of 1890s' New Orleans. Aware of deep yearnings that are unfulfilled by marriage and motherhood, Edna plunges into an illicit liaison that reawakens her long dormant desires, inflames her heart, and eventually blinds her to all else.

There were two copies at the library with the same title and the same author, so I borrowed both. The main novel, Awakening, is in both books, however, the stories were different. And I was glad to have both, as it gave me the opportunity to read so many of this author's works. It is an ultimate pleasure, for both the stories and the literary style, and I could read Kate Chopin's works over and over again. Hard to find something similar in modern American literature. Highly recommended, specially for those summer days' readings. Mind you, I wonder how much the situation changed for women, over the years ...
