Annotation Miles Franklin wrote My Brilliant Career as a romance to entertain her friends. It depicts the poor, intelligent Sybylla who cannot accustom herself to her family's reduced circumstances. She is given a reprieve and sent to her Grandmother's grand house, where she mingles with the best rural society, including the handsome Harry Beecham. She is faced with the choice of material improvement through marriage, or personal improvement through working for her dreams.

Tedious and plodding, this could be subtitled "My Not-so-Brilliant Memoir."

Historical fiction about Australia with some interesting things the. I found the main character to be as obnoxious about being "ugly" as some are about being beautiful. She was totally self-centered about it and gave no others in her life the benefit of the doubt or credit for honesty in relationships with her.
