The advantage of "Idiot's Guide" and "for Dummies" series is that they assume NO prior knowledge on the reader's part. Usually that means that no important information or steps are missed through assumption. This volume does a good job of introducing both pianos and electric keyboards along with the rudiments of music notation and keyboard playing.

The book is certainly helpful for those teens and adults just beginning their keyboard experience. I found the chapter on practicing especially helpful.

I didn't find the material hampered by its 1998 publication date. the book doesn't intend to deliver detailed synthesizer, midi, or recording information.
