This Canadian book was the push I needed to get running and get fit. Starts with a run/walk method and picks up speed from there.

Found this book to be very helpful even though the run/walk program was not suitable for me. It is framed around being prepared to run 10K at the end of the 13 weeks. Otherwise useful information.
