Some extremist Muslims find the makings of a bomb in a field near Israel and ship it to the U.S. There in Denver they put it together and take it to a major ball game to blow it up. This is a concentrated story with a lot of side stories and interpersonal relationships.
One side story. Jack Ryan is now 2nd highest in the C.I.A. Liz Elliot, the National Security Adviser, is jealous of Jack’s influence and tries to smear his honor, almost breaking up his marriage. When Cathy, Jack’s wife, finds out who is behind this she fights back. At a party Cathy sees Liz talking to some Newspaper people. Cathy walks over and calls Liz’s morals into question with innuendos and speculation. Cathy then takes Jack on a mini honeymoon. That was hilarious!

Book was OK. The major problem with it is that th book was too detailed with technical details. For example, all of the detail depicted in the assembling of the bomb was too much. It made the book longer than necessary and very difficult to read at times. I rated this for 16 and older because it was a difficult read at times. It took me a while to read it due to the technical aspects put into a lot of the book and I lost interest for a week at a time. There were some times that sucked you in, especially the last 15% of the book.

This terrific novel although 20 years old is a great commentary on what could happen in a world that is epitomized by the partisanship, personal ambition of individuals and the total lack of coordination and/or cooperation of various bureaucracies within current and recent governments both here and abroad.

Another of Clancy's worst case scenarios plays out; the book is a bit too long and ponderous, and Clancy once again is way too enthusiastic about technology.

"No, this [i.e. peace] could not really happen. It wasn't possible. Even the Carter-Sadat-Begin talks in America ... had choked and died when Israel had utterly failed to consider an equitable settlement for the Palestinians. No, Qati was sure of that. Perhaps he could not depend on the Russians. Perhaps he could not depend on the Saudis. Certainly he could not depend on the Americans. But he could depend on Israel. The Jews were far too stupid, far too arrogant, far too shortsighted to see that their best hope for long-term security could only lie in an equitable peace. The irony struck him very hard, hard enough to garner a smile. It had to be God's plan, that his movement would be safeguarded by his bitterest enemies. Their obstinacy, their stiff Jewish necks would never bow to this." Source: p. 216 of the Thorndike Press large print edition (1991).

"The key to it, Qati knew, was whether or not the Americans would put real pressure on the Zionists. They'd never done so. They'd allowed the Israelis to attack an American warship [i.e. the USS Liberty in 1967] and kill American sailors — and forgiven them before the bleeding had stopped, before the last victim had died. When American military forces had to fight for every dollar of funds from their own Congress, that same spineless body of political whores fell over itself giving arms to the Jews. America had never pressured Israel in any meaningful way." Source: p. 214 of the Thorndike Press large print edition (1991).
