This series shown on PBS is outstanding, from Confucius to Mao the story of China is told in an engaging manner. Notice the timing of big change and how it corresponds to Europe, we found the age of enlightenment era happening in both places to be revelatory.

Excellent overview of Chinese history with good map illustrations. Some may find the pace occasionally slow in the first five chapters, but the sixth and last was very illuminating and candid regarding Western imperialism's effects on Qing Dynasty China in 19th Century and subsequent Chinese history, including the Opium Wars and Boxer Rebellion.
