"A heart-wrenching, yet hopeful, memoir of a young marriage that is redefined by mental illness and affirms the power of love. Mark and Giulia's life together began as a storybook romance. The fell in love at eighteen, married at twenty-four, and were living their dream life in San Francisco. When Giulia was twenty-seven, she suffered a terrifying and unexpected psychotic break that landed her in the psych ward for nearly a month. One day she was vibrant and well-adjusted; the next she was delusional and suicidal, convinced that she was the devil and that her loved ones were not safe. All she wanted was to die. Eventually, Giulia fully recovered, and the couple had a son. But, soon after Jonas was born, Giulia had another breakdown, and then a third a few years after that. Pushed to the edge of the abyss, everything the couple had once taken for granted was upended. A story of the fragility of the mind, and the tenacity of the human spirit, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward is, above all, a love story that raises profound questions: How do we care for the people we love? What and who do we live for? Breathtaking in its candor, radiant with compassion, and written with dazzling lyricism, Lukach's is an intensely personal odyssey through the harrowing years of his wife's mental illness, anchored by an abiding devotion to family that will affirm readers' faith in the power of love"--Provided by publisher.

This true story is about the author's wife developing a psychosis and their experiences with the American mental health system, and how her illness affected him. I found it boring and skimmed through it to finish it.

Fantastic. Could not put it down. Finished with a huge amount of respect and admiration for both the author and his wife, and their families. A beautifully written story.

I was rather disappointed in this memoir. I think it was because I expected more about the wife's experience with the diagnosis of mental illness and the treatment, but the entire story was from the perspective of her husband. Perhaps the title should be "My Experience of My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward." It would have been more accurate. While he did an excellent job describing the difficulty, upheavel and frustration a family endures with the diagnosis of mental illness, the story just seemed too one-sided and a bit self-indulgent for me.

Mark and Guilia have a happy courtship and the beginnings of happy marriage until Guilia start acting strange. So begins a mystery diagnosis - which is never really pinned down - and the first of three stays in the psych ward. Mark's struggle is painful but Guilia's hit more with me. Either way you read it there's a painful story here and missteps and frustrations on either side. The love that Mark has for his wife, and that Guilia has for her husband, is what keeps you going throughout the whole thing

A must read for any family that has had to deal with mental health issues. Realistically told from husband's viewpoint, but wife's honesty with her illness is amazing. Can not speak highly enough about this couple's journey and how they truly live their commitment to each other.

After hearing the author tell a story about the unanticipated onset of his wife's mental illness I was interested to learn more of their story. This book satisfied that itch.

This is a really good read, honest and sad, about what it's like to love someone with mental illness. It's written as a memoir, not an instructional aid, but much can be gleaned between the lines. It's a story of love and perseverance but not one of cures or easy answers.

We are all so fragile and just doing the best we can. This book reminds me of this. It's a very good read (a little less so as it inches to its ending) that I consumed in a single evening.

Tremendous. A beautiful memoir about love being shattered and rebuilt in the face of daunting mental illness. Highly recommend if you're looking for something to make you believe in the power of love and commitment.
