This is such a heartwarming read and as many have described it -- a combination of Anne of Green Gables and Pippi Longstocking. Inge Marie does get into lots of mischief and her grandmother helps her realize that you don't have to be a perfect child to be loved. The adventures Inge Marie has with her grandmother, the farm animals, her friend Klaus and other islanders are delightful.

A great book for a readaloud!

Such a fun book! This is an excellent read aloud with great characters that gives just a touch of historic insight into rural Danish life in 1911.

Inga Maria is a sweet child who comes to live with her grandmother on a small island off Denmark's coast. Inga finds joy in most everything she sees & does, even when it sometimes lands her in trouble. Great for lovers of Pippi Longstocking & Anne of Green Gables. An excellent read-aloud. Grades 2-5

The best way to describe this book is "Anne of Green Gables in Denmark", and it's exactly as charming as that makes it sound. A young girl whose mother recently died is sent (in 1911) to live on an island with her grandmother. It's a super old-fashioned story, and the basic premise--newcomer to town brings mischief with her and shakes up the stodgy locals!--has been done to death, and yet everything about this book is heartwarming and delightful.
