"Self-destructive, pigheaded, and overfond of the bottle, Jack Taylor ... is a forty-something ex-cop trying to earn a living as a private detective in his native Galway. Taylor has burned a lot of bridges, but he still has a knack for uncovering ugly truths. I found the first of three episodes to be depressing as all-get-out. There was not one uplifting moment. Plus it is raining outside today and I got a leak in the bedroom that will have to have someone fix it. But that won't happen until next week.

In fact three 90-minutes TV films featuring Iain Glen (The tough Dragon Queen's most trusted warrior Jorah Mormont in "Game of Thrones") a ruggedly handsome, amiable yet damaged Irish private investigator who was once a "Guard" Sargent before he punched a Minister's lights out during a traffic stop. How's that not an alluring and endearing premise? Thoroughly enjoyed this hard boiled gumshoe series but I am a fan of Ken Bruen's novels and films based on his work. Anyway, back to the three films: "The Guards 2010," "The Pikemen 2011" and close to home "The Magdalen Martyrs 2011."

Good storyline, not as good acting, too much alcohol induced not delirium scenes reduce the detective job's credibility.
Good entertainment.

Gritty and suspenseful. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed Iain Glen in Downton Abbey so thought we'd give this a try. However, because of a dull script and lackluster directing we turned it off after 20 minutes. The story just never got off the ground. Similar to the San Diego Chargers, it's not worth spending valuable time on something that's simply not entertaining. Inspector George Gently, Wallander, Case Histories, and Shetland are better examples of British police/detective shows.

I like this series. I have the second series and will see how that is.

A gritty, interesting series, filmed and (mostly) set in County Galway, Ireland. Interesting to see a different side of Iain Glen (better known as Ser Jorah from Game of Thrones).

Ian Glen is terrific as Jack Taylor. This series almost has a film noir quality. my only criticism is that I wish there were more epiosdes.

Not bad, not my favorite, but not bad. I did think there was too much swearing (In particular a word starting with F.) .

The grittiest mysteries since Rebus. We really liked this series, very dark with just enough humour to keep it from being a real downer. The lead character is a terrible reprobate but his back story, gradually revealed, explains a lot.
