A young orphan, Oliver is left to fend for himself until he is befriended by a band of young thieves who quickly train him in their craft. But Oliver is not content to be a thief--for he knows that life holds great joys and true happiness cannot be stolen--but must be earned. Arguably the last great old-fashioned movie musical to receive near-universal critical acclaim, Oliver! first hit screens more than 37 years ago. As transformed into a film, the timeless West End and Broadway show remains incredibly faithful to the classic work of literature by Charles Dickens, dank and dark, an anomaly of song-and-dance cinema. A film of many facets, it is both a warts-and-all view of Victorian London, an adaptation of a classic novel, a salient slice of significant social commentary, and a rip-roaring tune-filled toe tapper to boot.

This movie has catchy songs, but I was quite disturbed that this movie is targeted to children as it has songs sung by prostitutes, as well as a song about staying with your abuser. Oliver Twist is definitely a story for adults, this was not my kind of kids' movie.

British Director Carol Reed made two classic movies that will be popular for generations to come. First, is the "Third Man" with Joseph Cotton and Orson Wells. The second, is the musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. Written for the stage and screen by Lionel Bart with many show stopping tunes. Who can forget the song "Food, Glorious Food" or " As Long As He Needs Me"? The story is of an orphan boy who runs away from an orphanage and joins of gang of boys in London picking peoples pockets. Mark Lester is a delightful Oliver in a cast that is great from top to bottom. I especially liked Ron Moody as Fagin and Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes. The British have a way of producing Dickens material because of the location shooting and the natural accent of the cast. "Oliver" captures both your heart and your mind. A great family movie and one that I have watched many times since its 1968 release. :Great Britain has many fine film studios and has made its share of wonderful movies. One of the best will always be "Oliver" for me. I hope you and your family will enjoy it as much as mine has over the years.

Great Family Entertainment!! "Oliver!" the musical still plays in London at the Theatre Royal. Now you can't get to London probably, but the film version is a classic that few are checking out. KCLS has 6 copies and only one is checked out. The classic Charles Dickens story Oliver Twist is set to music with Ron Mooney staring as Fagin and Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes. Young Mark Lester is wonderful as Oliver Twist. In 1958 Oliver was the Academy Award choice as Best Picture. It could be the best picture of the weekend for you and your family. Take advantage of this momentarily forgotten classic Charles Dickens musical!

I loved it twice already .... and I loved this third look just as much if not more! What other film could pass that test?

I was shocked by the way events were portrayed in this movie. I remembered it from my youth - I was 20 when it came out and received 6 Academy Awards - including best picture. So I decided to watch it all these 45 years later. I can still remember many of the songs. The acting is so incredible - and the staging and the musical numbers and the sets. Of course this came after the successful run of the play which came after many film productions which was all based on the book by Dickens. But now we know so much more about Dickens' England and the cruel and inhumane treatment of men, women and children in the workhouses. Not the light cherry young boys singing about their food. Just read about the workhouses in Jennifer Worth's memoirs (Call the Midwife) and it is appalling that this movie got away with that. Now to read the original Dickens novel Oliver Twist.
