Sandy Edwards (Toni Collette), an ambitious geologist, suddenly finds herself having to baby-sit Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) a taciturn Japanese businessman. Hoping to strike up a business deal, she agrees to take him on a field trip around Western Australia's remote Pilbara desert. Against the background of the outback these two diametrically opposed strangers are to find themselves thrust together in a potentially life or death situation. As they journey further and further into the desert, they leave more and more of what they know about each other and themselves behind.

I have always enjoyed Aussie films- way back from when I first saw Picnic at Hanging Rock in the 70's. With Toni Collette it has an added attraction. Toni is an actress that never seems to have been typecast-she plays various roles with equal amounts of panache, style, humour and gravity when called for. This is a story of a japanese investor being shown around the mines in outback Australia and Toni is his guide, driver, escort. Though he also thinks she is his slave/attendant/luggage carrier. This sets up some interesting tension between them-especially when they are stuck in the middle of nowhere bogged to the axles and no help in sight. A great movie for a stay at home night's entertainment.

A pretty good movie. Interesting situation they find themselves in.

This Australian movie starts off okay, but gets bogged down in sentimentality that seems a bit forced under the circumstances.

Interesting account of an Australian woman and a Japanese man in the Australian outback. I wouldn't watch this with the kids, however.
