I really enjoyed this 6-part mystery series. Characters are better developed and more realistic than in most detective shows. A few other reviewers questioned whether Scottish or Shetland accents should be played up or down. I imagine the intended audience is larger than Scotland and Shetland so accurate dialects may or may not be emphasized. A few unrealistic things happen to allow for plot twists through a 6 episode evolving crime mystery. These less realistic blips seemed excusable given the well-developed main characters who looked and acted more like real people and law enforcement colleagues.

Shetland and Scotland locations are depicted in a bleak light to match the gritty tone of the crime story. Fortunately the treatment of contemporary inter-racial, LGBT, and sexism issues were handled well. Story includes a realistic balance of diverse character types. Some women were depicted as gluttons for punishment with abusive situations, but such naive people do exist. Overall I enjoyed the show very much. Most of the story requires a willing suspension of disbelief.

I wonder how many people complained--because season three really toned down the accents and stopped using slang that only those from Scotland would know! I really enjoy the series, and don't mind "rewinding" to figure our what they said. Good plots, good acting, lovely scenery.

Outstanding ! I am so happy my library gets programs from the BBC.. With out the library I would never get to view these amazing program.. Only the British know how to do good mystery.. I hope my library continues to bring these programs to my community.

So so good !!! Best watched with a friend, though, since plot and character development became complicated and difficult to follow at times.

Kept us on the edges of our seat to the point where we had to watch all six episodes in rapid succession over the course of a few days.

always amusing when someone who spent 8 minutes in another country tries to be an expert on language, law & customs of that country. or when such folk confuse a dramatic tv series with a documentary. shouldn't the range of accents suggest the currently fashionable concept of diversity? or mobility, since the mainland, orkneys & shetlands all have cars, planes & ferries & therefore, incomers?

Excellent all the way. Tense, delicate even if the events are horrific. A good example how to create intense moments without illustration of graphic details.

A good set of DVDs with the beauty of the Shetland Islands as a backdrop. The mystery in this series lasts through all season, and the conclusion was disappointing, using the old traditional conceit of withholding information.

Excellent 6-part story that brings the beautifully scenic, tightly-knit Shetland community in touch with much darker forces in Glasgow. The plot is complicated but doesn't feel contrived. Also the first time I've seen rape portrayed from the lens of the men affected by it--here, Douglas Henshall does a finely nuanced job of displaying grief, anger, and continued fortitude.

Reviews of this film are revealing, especially the contributor who has lived on the Shetland Islands and criticizes the accents and legal system inaccuracies. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this 3rd series more than the first two. Yes, it's relatively slow-moving, but I'm comfortable with the characters and mood now and used to the pace. The acting is first-rate, and the plot keeps you guessing with issues of witness protection and organized crime involved. This series has adult themes, and requires patience, but is worth the time invested!
