Margaret, a girl who lives on the Prairies is trying to finish her quilt with a border of flying geese. Everything seems to be going wrong, her grandmother is dead, her father gets hurt, her brother announces that he is going to fight in the First World War, and the family has to move to Ontario. At her new school, she is ridiculed for her poverty and patched clothes. But she struggles to find hope again, and finds it in the most unlikely places.
