I'm a fan of HBO shows, but this was overloaded with hateful, misogynistic characters and relentlessly offensive dialogue that made it impossible for me to focus on the story. Did not finish.
Awesome series! Well written and excellent acting.
I only watched one episode as it was too violent for me.
Great Series, and so well done to really capture the 1920s in such a manner that makes you feel that as if you are really there! Steve Buscemi really brings the whole thing together and the storyline is just amazing!
We don't get HBO or Showtime at home so I always wait for the DVDs to come out. I love this series. I like this beter than "Boss", but that's because I'm a history buff and this is all based on real people and real incidents. There is way too much graphic sex for my taste, but it's HBO, so you know what you're going to get. Despite that, the acitng, the writing, the sets, the costumes-everything is just wonderful. The characters are so complex-you really don't know whther to hate them or give them a break. I really enjoyed the special features that give bios of the characters and then the ones on the last disk that tell about the making of the series and the construction of the Boardwalk. Amazing!
The first season of Boardwalk Empire is set in Atlantic City, NJ in early 1920 as Prohibition begins and ends with the local and presidential elections later that year. Boardwalk Empire is centered around the political boss Nucky Thompson who is the Atlantic County treasurer. The episodes mainly deal with Nucky's personal life as well as his political and financial activities in Atlantic City and elsewhere. Some of the action takes place in NYC and Chicago as gangsters and the mafia get involved in the bootlegging business. Also during this period the FBI hires agents and sets up offices and operations to enforce Prohibition.
