The first book in CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning British espionage series starring a team of MI5 agents united by one common bond: They've screwed up royally and will do anything to redeem themselves.

London, England: Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what's left of their failed careers. The "slow horses," as they're called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly and can't be trusted anymore. Maybe they got in the way of an ambitious colleague and had the rug yanked out from under them. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle--not unusual in this line of work. One thing they all have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. And most of them would do anything to get there─even if it means having to collaborate with one another.

River Cartwright, one such "slow horse," is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself. But is the victim who he first appears to be? And what's the kidnappers' connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone has his own agenda.

Mystery series first book tells of a group of has-been MI-5 operatives known as ‘slow horses’ who become involved in a seeming terrorist kidnapping.

A lot is not known for a while as Herron fills readers in on characters’ backstories and unfolds the mystery, so I’d say this is a slow-paced story. It’s funny at times as these are characters with foibles. I’ll have to read more before deciding to stay with them.

See comments of Spook Street. Same cast of characters. Herron is a brilliant writer and the British English and London street scene descriptions are great. I suspect that all books in the Slough House series are similar. MI5 rejects working in a rundown part of the city not only fight crime but the higher-ups at Regent's Park.

While this book was written a couple of years ago, it brings up situations that are really pertinent to what is going on in the world right now. A group of MI5 agents who have messed up their careers in one way or another, called Slow Horses, are put in the middle of a crisis where right wing British nationalist have kidnapped a Pakistani British national (who happens to be the nephew of a prominent person in Pakistan's government) and threatened to cut his head off. The Slow Horses must find out who is really behind the attacks and try to rescue the young Pakistani man before he is executed live on the internet.

Slough House is where disgraced MI5 agents are sent; aka "Slow Horses". River Cartwright has just been sent there; and he's trying to get out. Good action adventure yarn. Beginning of series

River Cartwright has been banished to Slough House - the British intelligence service's dumping ground for agents that have messed up. This usually means working at incredibly boring tasks but the slow horses of Slough House get to prove their are not that slow after all when a young man is abducted. If you enjoyed the movie "Kingsmen" you'll enjoy the ride.
