She has good ideas that I want to work toward, such as : using less plastic, having natural cleaning supplies and simplifying baby gear. I enjoyed the beginning of this book and the later chapters I skipped around to what interested me.

It was more useful than some books in that the author shared many specific examples of making do with less stuff. Might be helpful to those just building their home and adult lives.

It is very similar to the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

Let's start with the obvious. This book is beautiful to hold and read. The book design and photographs are lovely. The writing is also surprisingly lovely.

The whole effect is the romanticizing of rustic simplicity, akin to indulging in a confectionary pastry.

While there is some pragmatic advice, much of it is also quite romantic. Some of the advice, while ecological sound, does feel a bit more to do with aesthetics than sustainability.

This is a nice overview of one type of simplicity, but certainly not comprehensive, nor a deep-dive. Much of the content would not be new information to anyone with even the most cursory understanding of the subject or a modicum of common sense.

Lastly, like many simplicity-materialism books and materials, I think there are racial and classist biases at play here. The reality is that not all of us cannot access or afford the sum or parts of the lifestyle choices presented here.

Additionally, throwing out what you have, to replace it with a more "sustainable" alternative, does not seem inherently sustainable. Despite being about having less stuff, it's still about STUFF and still materialistic.

In total, an imperfect but fun distraction in a beautiful package.
