The 'plot', such as it is, wanders from broad comedy to melodrama to just plain silly. There are a few nice touches, such as the musical conjuring up of dueling hombres in spaghetti westerns, but the dialogue is never sharp enough for the film's comedic intent and the editing left it way too long. Judy Davis is outstanding as the heroine's wise-cracking mother, and of course no one is going to get tired of looking at Kate Winslet. But overall the film falls flat and does not even pass muster as a harmless way to spend an evening.

Hmmm-- this was interesting and intriguing at the very beginning...but I waited for a few more minutes. And then- Nah.. I could not watch this movie any longer. :(

Well shot and the costumes are amazing. Such a great film it's now one of my favourites.

I read the book before seeing the movie and I think the book was better, but Kate Winslet does a great job. It's a fun movie.

One of those films you can't guess not the end but not even the next scene.
A female Count of Monte Cristo.

Quite enjoyed the take-offs on classic Westerns (the showdown, etc.) Silly fun for the most part.

An interesting idea, and shows some promise, but ultimately the cruelty and revenge theme overshadow any cleverness and make the film merely bad-tempered.

I can see that this is a love it or hate it film. I loved the first 2/3's of the film. I thought Kate Winslet and Judy Davis were both outstanding. I loved the setting, the characters and the costumes were wonderful. If the film had wrapped up about 2/3's of the way through, it would have been very enjoyable. The last section, however, shifted from something fun and quirky to something really unpleasant. Some of the messages and themes presented at the end were very problematic for me and certainly made the film a lot less fun. Overall I'm glad I watched it, but I understand the problems some people have with it.

this had the potential to be a great film, but the plot was slow to unroll and there was too much information that was not available when it needed to be.

Plus with 14 years difference between Kate and Liam, it made the story line a little unbelievable.

Too bad ... it could have been good.

I'm back, you bastards.
Well, our Gert's a handsome, capable girl. She knows feedstock, haberdashery...
-(WHISPERS) Mother!
And what powders are lethal to maggots and fly-struck merinos!
What kind of bloody awful music is this?
-Blues. Oh! Music to hang by. Yeah, I don't know. I like it.
She's got a lot of pain in her voice.
-Yeah. Billie Holiday.
Sounds like she needs one.
Style and decency. Some designers just don't seem to know the difference, do they?
Hmm. Fire someplace.
-Yes. Dungatar.
Burning off rubbish, were they? Looks like they overdid it.
-You never met the rubbish.
