I liked the science fiction DVD. It was well done. The plot was strong and had a purpose. It was well acted. I also like stories about aliens. It is not to violent or sexual for children.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve based on the 1998 short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, this 116-minute SF thriller tells the story about the arrival of several extraterrestrial ships.
Louise Banks, a linguist, stops the war at the last moment.
After all, it is an enjoyable and throught-provoking entertaining piece, but the last episode of love-story appears cheaply and shallowly contrived.

It was a little boring in some spots, but the plot was interesting. I just don't understand it at all.

I like movies that make me think but there were too many holes in this one. Poor editing or implausible plot. I would have liked more explanation of how Amy Adams was able to figure out the alien language and how to begin to communicate with them, given all the possibilities for language. Too many sirens and too much running around by stereotypes of obviously un-intellectual government representatives and unruly mobs. The dream sequences about her daughter were distracting. I couldn't figure out where they were going with that. Had to look up someone else's interpretation online.

How does a heptapod with seven tentacles assemble a spacecraft? Obviously, any alien creature needs something like hands with an opposing thumb(s) to grip tools to build a spacecraft to reach Earth. This movie makes no sense. I would rate "Arrival" at no more than 2.0 stars. A far better science fiction movie is "The Day The Earth Stood Still," the 1951 original film with Michael Rennie.

We are still talking about this movie and we watched it months ago. You can't yap when you see it: definitely have to think and use your brain, observe and Pay Attention. But man, what a reward once you finally have that light bulb moment and you get it! Really recommend it to anyone who wants a thoughtful, intelligent film but NOT for a Friday night. Save it for a Saturday night or a Sunday night Bookclub or something.

This first contact story is both visually and intellectually interesting. The aliens' form is a surprise, as is their style of written communication. The story explores big questions, like...Does the need of the many outweigh the need of an individual?...How much would you be willing to sacrifice in order to save someone else?...and...Can a person's influence last beyond his or her lifetime?

This is a slightly modified remake of The day the earth stood still and Independence day mashed together - mmmeeehhh

A beautiful deep-thinker of a movie full of bittersweet moments that write a message of powerful hope. When 12 alien ships mysteriously arrive on earth, linguist Louise Banks--along with a team of scientists and military leaders--is brought to the site of one of the landings to attempt to communicate and find out why the ships came, but what she finds is beyond anything she has ever imagined. Not a typical "alien movie," this is a story of language, courage, and choices, with mind-teasing twists that fans of movies like "Inception," "The Prestige," and "Now You See Me" will appreciate.

Memory is a strange thing. It doesn't work like I thought it did. We are so bound by time, by its order... I remember moments in the middle... And this was the end... But now I'm not so sure I believe in beginnings and endings. There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived.

If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?
-Maybe I'd say what I feel more often. I... I don't know.
You know, I've had my head tilted up to the stars for as long as i can remember. You know what
surprised me the most? It wasn't meeting them. It was meeting you.
