Loved this book. William Boyd is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. Great characters and a great story. Definitely recommend this book. My full review is here: http://671books.net/fiction/ordinary-thunderstorms/
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel/mystery. I don't really find it all that far fetched and, if anything, it reinforced to me how quickly and easily any of our "comfortable" lives can suddenly do a 180 degree flip. I found most of the characters to be interesting and believable (not all, but most) and loved the backdrop of climatology and clouds.
A good thriller, well written even if unrealistic at times. The end keeps you in limbo or lets you finish the story the way you want to.
Very good read - first novel of his that I have read - but it fairly kept my attention.
I agree that the early storyline is somewhat far-fetched, but he weaves the sub-plots aand characters together very well. Read it and see!
A complex tale of survival, convincing (after a somewhat preposterous setup) and imaginative, with deftly sketched characters and beautiful prose. And a fast-paced thriller.
This is a good mystery about the pharmaceuticals industry and the plot is very believable in terms of that industry. A man, by chance, is forced to live underground in London and that part of the novel is very realistically done as well.
Good suspense. Kept me wanting to read to find out how everything would come together. Many interesting characters that were well developed. Touched on interesting topics that were somewhat frustrating. Overall a good read, but was left with an unfinished feeling at the end. Would make a good movie.
This story is about a large pharmaceutical company trying to get a drug approved despite some of its less than desirable side effects. The protagonist inadvertently stumbles into their web of deceit and becomes a target that must be eliminated at all costs. Some aspects are interesting, such as the way the main character, an average Joe, must disappear in this technological age of Big Brother, where everyday tasks seem to leave a trace. Unfortunately, the plot is predictable and has been done too many times before.
Boyd is an author worth following.
Adam, a climatologist on a job interview in London, becomes the innocent suspect in the murder of a renowned immunologist, Dr. Wang. He also seems to be targeted as the person with information ?someone' wants kept under wraps. His going underground to elude arrest leads him to life in London he could never have envisioned. Boyd is such an articulate writer. This book has engaging characters and plotting. It was hard to put down. I love his writing, having read much that he's written. You cheer for Adam in his many guises. Will he ever be able to live his old ?normal' life? I think there may be more books with Adam and Rita, the woman who knows more about him than he thinks.
