Probably one of the rare times author went political & dark on the follies of war.
Great metaphor on the cold war & the two superpowers.
Cliffhanger ending appropriate.
Slight problem on lack of diplomacy.
Hubris by population until the end was just right.

One of my childhood favourites! The silliness escalates in classic Dr. Seuss rhyme, weapons get more and more ridiculous and wondrous. I stared at these pages for hours. And it has a dark but useful message in the end; respect your neighbours, even if they are different, and don't be afraid to be the one to walk away sometimes.

Well that escalated quickly. I had no idea Dr. Seuss was so dark and creepy. This apocalyptic nightmare scared me. I think I'll read the Stand for the third time just to wash the bad taste out of my soul.

A good story for little kids.

The ending was really unusual, but for kids the usual Dr. Suess rhyming and word play is fun.

DO NOT GET THIS FOR YOUR KIDS. Despite the fact that Dr. Seuss wrote it, it is NOT a kid's book. It is a thinly veiled diatribe against arms proliferation. While I agree with his point of view, it's not what I had in mind when I decided to get more Dr. Seuss to read to my 3 year old. I thought I'd find something similar to the all-play-ball-on-wall part of Hop in Pop. Ended up with guns, soldiers, and wars, etc. which I did not feel like trying to explain to him. The ending, with the 2 sides sending their populations into underground bunkers while suicide-soldiers were poised to bomb each other, was just appalling. Of course, it's my fault for not reviewing a summary before getting it, but I didn't want another parent to make that mistake, hence this comment.
