For most of their existence, comic representation of queerness relied on implication and suggestion. Modern representations of queerness have progressed to more overt 2SLGBTQIA+ themes, characters, storylines, creators and symbols. This talk will examine the comics of the past to understand how queerness was once depicted.

Professor Halsall will discuss early queer graphic novels and offers her insight into the socio-political context of the time including: the Stonewall riots, the feminist and civil rights movements and the AIDS epidemic.
